The Island of Misfit Noise is an ongoing multi-media project, begun in 1998 as a musical group with a constantly rotating membership. The original live group broke up in 2013. Since 2014 it has existed solely as a recording project, trading music online with other collaborators from Michigan to Australia, and other points in-between. The style we made is very free-form. It is whatever participants bring to it.
I considered retiring the band when I began working on a script treatment for a movie bearing the same title. But, I decided, instead, to combine both projects together into a single performance art sort of thing.

Shooting sporadically, one piece at a time, The Island of Misfit Noise Movie is being put together as resources become available. It is a no-budget sci-fi fantasy comedy, as if an amalgamation of Sick Sock Monsters From Outer Space, Dr. Otto and the Riddle of the Gloom Beam, The Kentucky Fried Movie, and Amazon Women on the Moon were directed by Ed Wood. But, it is being written, directed, and produced by Mike Nobody instead, with numerous collaborators.

I would like to perform live again. But I think I’m done trying to keep a stable group together. I am not very good at that. I dislike playing alone in public. So, I guess I will have to do things differently now. The IOMN is not making any long-term commitments with other musicians anymore. This project is all temporary, with no obligations. The frequency of IOMN performances will depend greatly on who wants to do it with me. Musically, it is sort of a Mike Nobody cover band to play my songs and whatever the others in the group want to play, too.
I’m totally down with finding more creative people who want to participate in making music or movies. To get a few business details up front, though;
- If I release any new material as the IOMN, I will buy all rights from contributors as a work for hire. I don’t want to dick around with who-owns-what or who-owes-what-to-whom anymore. I’m done with that shit. I cannot afford much. So, it may just be a beer and pizza or something like that.
- If I perform live with other musicians as the IOMN, we will split the profits equally AFTER expenses. Per Diems on tour are considered an expense.
I never expect to make a lot of money as an artist-musician. I like to have fun and hang out with people, making cool stuff. It is practically the only social life I have.
