Well, it finally happened. Killed by corporate greed. Paramount wanted to save $500 million, after it’s merger with Skydance Media. It isn’t as surprising as it is overdue. We still have the internet to find new music with, which MTV abdicated long ago. But, a common gathering space for popular culture is gone. Everything is fragmented into tiny niches now, siloing us all into our own little bubbles. That has its pros and cons, I guess. The days of elite gatekeepers maintaining a homogenized mainstream are over. Platforms like YouTube and Spotify have their own problems. But, they aren’t an invulnerable monopoly the way that Music Television was at the height of its power. Still, I will miss the occasional bright spots that the channel still had for a couple of years.
